BUILDING YOUR WITCH'S CABINET
(no construction involved)

Many different kinds of items are used in crafting spells --- including herbs, oils, candles, incense, gemstones, colored cloth, ribbon, sea shells, coins, and other various small objects. Some Witches refer to these items, on hand and ready to be used, as their Witches Cabinet.  “Witches Cabinet” is an all-inclusive term. It means every single magickal ingredient or item a Witch has at her disposal to use in spell work. It is not an actual cabinet.

Your Witch's Cabinet is simply your "stash", your "supplies", your "stock", your "stuff". Where you keep these things is another matter. You can set aside a pantry shelf, a kitchen cabinet, or a bookcase. You can buy a footlocker, a chest or a large plastic tub to keep all of your magickal ingredients in. Anything large enough to hold all of your supplies will suffice. As you practice, your supplies will grow, and perhaps you will have to change the place where your keep your Witch's Cabinet many times.

As soon as a Witch decides to cast spells, it becomes necessary to begin stocking the Witches Cabinet. Depending on the kind of magick the Witch wants to do and how s/he likes to work, s/he may choose to begin by collecting a variety of dried herbs to have on hand. If s/he has a particular fondness for gemstones, s/he may decide to build up her/his collection of gemstones of various kinds first. A Witch who loves Aromatherapy and who likes to make potions may start by collecting various essential oils. Most Witches will start as I did. They will look at the problems and issues that they deal with often and they buy items that can be used in spells to resolve those problems and issues first.

If money is not too limited, a Witch may decide to go ahead and buy an ounce of all of the herbs s/he will want to use in her/his spells. Likewise, s/he may pick up a dozen or so essential oils and gemstones.

If money is tight, however, it may be best to consider the kinds of spells you will cast most often and to buy just a few herbs, gemstones and candles to start you off. Some Witch Shops/Metaphysical Stores offer herbal mixes and oil blends already prepared for a particular purpose. You might find a blessing oil or love oil or money/prosperity herb mix or healing herb mix. If you need to buy these prepared items due to budget constraints, that’s fine. Buy the ones that say “money, riches, prosperity, wealth, etc” and get busy on a money spell!

Eventually though, as a real Witch who is casting spells as a part of daily life, you’ll want to make your own mixes and blends. This will require that you have a collection of individual herbs and essential oils on hand so you can craft your own recipes.

Start small, if need be, and work your way into a full Witches Cabinet.

As you read and learn, you will start to look at everyday items with a magickal eye. You will begin to see how items you have previously overlooked can be used in a spell. Start looking around your home and see how many things you see that can be used for magick. Train yourself to think of magick and spell work all of the time. See old items with new eyes. The next time you find that penny face up on the ground, you will pick it up; knowing that it will make a perfect addition to a prosperity or luck spell you will cast one day. Do this, and in no time at all, you will have quite a grand Witch's Cabinet indeed.

 Blessings & Peace! /|\
